Successful VoIP Implementation Using Quality of Service (QoS) Protocols

Voice over Internet (VoIP) has revolutionized telephone communications for many small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) over the past two decades. Not only is VoIP significantly less expensive than traditional telephony, but it provides business owners with significantly more flexibility, portability and scalability. As with all technologies, however, not all VoIP connections are created equally.

One of the most important aspects of VoIP to consider is Quality of Service (QoS). QoS refers to the prioritization of data packets so that important data traffic reaches its destination as quickly as possible, while less important data is slowed down or held back in the queue until the system has greater available bandwidth. Left to their own devices, routers employ a first-in, first-out data management strategy, whereby priority is given based strictly on when the data entered the network. With QoS, routers are able to differentiate between data packets based on QoS tags that are assigned to specific data types. These tags predetermine the level of importance of any given data packet, and then organize the flow through the network based on your organization’s specified priorities.

For most SMBs, VoIP should be given priority status to help ensure that calls are clear. Without QoS in place, VoIP calls on an otherwise busy network run the risk of sounding choppy, containing echos or even dropping altogether. Failure to implement QoS as part of your organization’s networking strategy is a quick way frustrate employees and customers alike.
