Gone are the days where employees sit at a desk and only have access to company data from a secure desktop computer in their office. And while there are countless advantages associated with the modern mobile business environment, there are also risks. Here are some best practices to ensure your sensitive data remains safe and protected.
- Educate users. It sounds simple (and it is), but it always amazes us how often companies just assume their employees will do the right thing. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that unless forced to do otherwise, most people will always pick a single simple (easy to remember…and easy to hack) password for their devices and programs.
- Adopt BYOD policies – and enforce them. If you don’t want employees to access any company data from a personal device, that needs to be explicitly outlined from the start. But the reality is that most companies have come to realize that letting employees use their own devices has a lot of benefits. But in order to make a BYOD environment safe for all users (and your company assets) you need a strong BYOD policy.
- Store data in a single location that can be accessed (but not downloaded) by remote devices. This is the single easiest way to ensure your information doesn’t land in the wrong hands. By treating mobile devices as a portal, and not a destination, you can specifically control who has access to specific information and the administrator can quickly make changes to login credentials if one of your employees is hacked or when an employee leaves the company.
