Rumors have it that this won’t just be another run-of-the-mill update, but rather a radical redesign, including an edge-to-edge curved glass front that eliminates the top and bottom bezels (and thereby the physical Home button). Apple’s goal is to integrate the Touch ID into the display, but preliminary beta testing leaks seem to indicate that there may be some troubleshooting left to do with that technology. Additional updated specs we’re hoping to see on the new iPhone 8 include

  • Biometric sensing capabilities such as facial recognition technology
  • OLED display that consumes less power while providing a thinner display with a higher contrast ratio and more true-to-life colors
  • Bluetooth “AirPods” included with purchase to eliminate the need for wired earbud adapters
  • Wireless charging
  • Dual-lens camera with possible AR capabilities
  • Support for the Apple Pencil
  • USB-C to replace Apple’s Lightening Connection
  • Enhance water resistance
  • Higher quality audio
  • Apple’s next generation processor (A10X or A11)
  • Stainless steel casing
  • Upgraded storage starting at 64GB and 3GB of RAM
  • Improved modem
  • iOS 11

In addition to the all-new iPhone 8 (which is expected to retail at $900 or more), Apple is also expected to release the iPhone 7S and IPhone 7S Plus this fall, which will provide more affordable upgrade options. Apple hopes that these simultaneous releases will help alleviate the frequent backorder situation that has happened previously when a new iPhone hits the market for the first time.

But don’t hold your breath for any live previews of this smartphone this summer. Apple has already signaled that they will hold off on unveiling the iPhone 8 until September only days before the device will be made available for preorder.
